President George HW Bush Battling Bronchitis

President George HW Bush Battling Bronchitis: "Former US President George HW Bush is in hospital in Texas recovering from bronchitis.

Mr Bush, 88, was admitted to Methodist Hospital last Friday due to a lingering cough that raised concern, his chief of staff told the Houston Chronicle.

Jean Becker added: "We have kept this quiet out of respect for him."

"His big problem is a chronic cough he can't get rid of so he's back at Methodist," she said. "This is not a life-threatening illness."

Mr Bush is in a stable condition and is expected to be released by the weekend, a spokeswoman for the hospital in Houston said.

He has been in and out of Methodist Hospital for a few weeks due to the lingering cough, and was visited by his son and former president George W Bush on Sunday.

Dr Amy Myunderse, who is overseeing Mr Bush's care, told the Chronicle: "Anytime someone the president's age has bronchitis, there's concern about possible pneumonia. But Mr Bush's condition never progressed to that level."

Mr Bush served a single term as president from 1989 to 1993. He was Ronald Reagan's vice president during his two terms in the White House.

The decorated World War Two naval aviator also served as the director of the CIA in 1976"
